TO HELL WITH KIBBLES!

As a rescuer, I can say with a clear conscience that I’ve done my best, or maybe beyond, for the rescued animals in every aspect. I have given them the best and I spare no expense in their food, supplements, and medical care. I’ve tried to spend as much time with them as possible in spite of my busy schedule.

Our animals have been fed with not only the supposedly ‘best’, expensive, holistic kibbles but even the ‘lousy’, cheap, colour-ridden ones. We discovered that kibbles are kibbles, whatever quality. Some manufacturers have claimed boldly on their packaging that their food helps to prevent urinary problems and prevent hairball, but we hate to say, we have not found it to be true. Why do I dare to say that? We feed our cats, especially those with history of urinary problems, raw and can food on advice from the vet but sometimes we run out of those food and we feed them kibbles and after 2 days of kibbles, the problem recur, and some serious enough to warrant a hospital stay again for insertion of catheter.

From last year onwards, we had a lot of problems with our animals, especially with the cats. When we fed them Orijen, we thought then that we were feeding them the best and we believed we were at that time. We spent thousands of RM every month feeding them. Yes, they throve with shining coats and a picture of health, not to mention the pockets of the supplier is well-lined. The comments and ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ from customers, the ’sangat cantik’ made us feel so proud, especially when people discovered that they were strays. Then, problems started with some of them and of course, the first thing we look at is food. Although it could not be confirmed then that it was not the food, we thought it’s better to be safe than to be sorry. We decided to change their food. By the way, feeding Orijen to about 170 cats then, got us the comment that we were not ‘in right mind’ and that came from a staff of this supplier in an open forum.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=856477&hl=

Very ironical that this staff has since left the company and has now attached himself to another pet food distributor.

Each time a food gives problems, we change to another brand. After Orijen, we changed to Artemis. Initially, the cats seemed ok. Then, several of them came down with urinary problems and a couple of them were serious enough to need catheter insertion. Several of them with this problem were discovered in time and we could nib the problem in the bud. Not only were the males affected, some females as well.

We knew then that dry food is not suitable for our cats. We started to make our own raw food for them. Of course, it is easier said than done, especially when the number of cats escalated to more than 170. We couldn’t make fast enough for them. Each them we make is not even enough to feed all for 1 meal, due to lack of manpower and cost. After a while, it was just getting too tedious and we switched to Regal, once in a while feeding them Addiction Salmon and Evo. As usual, things were ok initially and then, again problems surfaced after a few months.

This last couple of weeks were bad with 2 of my cats hospitalised at St Angel for FLUTD and others straining. One was serious enough with possible kidney problems. These were not the only cases this year. This is the 3rd bout of urinary problems we are experiencing. Until today, these 2 cats have not fully recovered. We even need to engage an acupuncturist for them.

We monitor our cats very closely. People have asked us how we know that the cats have problems urinating. When they go to the litter box to pee, we go down on all fours to see whether there is any urine flow. We also observe them, especially if they make frequent trips to the litter box. Amy has learnt from Dr Toh to feel their bladder for any blockage.

Anyway, enough is enough. We are utterly fedup with kibbles. We decided to make our own raw food again, no matter how expensive or tedious. We also alternate with can food which is very expensive as well. Sometimes, we boil chicken liver for them. Of course, we supplement all their food well alternating with aloe, cranberry, salmon oil, olive oil, enzyme, etc. etc. It’s extremely expensive making raw food for cats. For their sake, we decided to sacrifice our time and to tighten our already tightened belt further. Dr Toh has advised to mix the kibbles with water before feeding them so as to increase their water intake. We still feed them kibbles but only twice a week and we practically soak them in water.

We would rather spend on good food then to spend on medical bills. The main thing is not the money but we hate to see the animal suffering and the mental torture for us, wondering whether he is going to survive or not. The bills for the 2 cats has made a huge crater in our pockets and the crater is still becoming bigger as the cats need to go for further blood test. But, we will never abandon an animal, as has happened in many cases at vets, because of high medical bills or for whatever reasons.

Dr Toh did suggest that another possible reason for this problem is stress. My cats have been in the same environment for years and they are used to it. I firmly believe it’s not the stress but the food as proven in cases where the problem recur when the cat was fed kibbles again.

When I think of the money spent on medical bills, I get very cheesed off with kibbles, as I have better ways to spend the money. It’s preferable to spend on something that’s good for them rather than antibiotics. Their medical expenses is taxing our already strained budget. But, what can we do, except to trust in God and do our best and work harder for them. We will NEVER hold back medical help for our cats and dogs if they need it. Apart from conventional medicine, we also use alternative medicine.

Such is my feeling about kibbles that the title of my post says is all.

First, let me clarify that I’ve no personal interest in FFF except that Sabrina and I and many other individuals are animal rescuers. I’m just speaking out for a fellow rescuer whom I can’t stand being maligned unfairly. I do not claim to represent FFF because I don’t have the right and Sabrina has not given me the authority to. But, I feel that I’ve to speak out because I and many other rescuers feel bad that FFF has been the target of groundless and baseless attacks by some quarters.

The attacks are vicious and bitchy via SMSes, and emails and public forums. The latest one being circulated is FFF account has been frozen. This is to deter the public from helping FFF in their rescue work at Pulau Ketam. I believe that these attacks originated out of envy and the fact that FFF has been given a lot of good press for the Pulau Ketam tragedy and that does not go well with some NGOs. So, in retaliation their supporters try to malign FFF name. Let me transcribe one of the SMSes that I received just yesterday.

‘….. I would like the public not be duped and suckered by misrepresentations. FFF is a private company owned by Sabrina Yeap who was sacked from SPCA. It is morally and legally wrong to ask for public donations, it has no accounts, no Patron or Trustees. SPCA Selangor is a registered society under the ROS and has a reputable Patron, Trustees and committee. SPCA Patron is …….’ (the SMS went on to give a list of impressive names and this SMS was purportedly ‘signed’ by Christine Chin and cc to more impressive names).

First, I don’t believe that this was ‘signed’ by Christine (whom I understand is out of the country or is she already back here). I’m sure Christine is not stupid and I believe that she would be more subtle. I’m sure experience would have taught her not to do a dumb thing like this.

Whoever wrote that SMS, please explain this:

1. How have FFF duped and suckered the public? Did FFF spend or even have 1.6 million to buy a bungalow to be used as a luxurious office for her and her staff? Did FFF get itself into a lawsuit and lose and pay for the legal fees with public donations?

2. Was Sabrina ‘sacked from SPCA’? That is one of the stinkiest lies that I’ve heard. Sabrina handed her resignation to one of the committee members in the presence of the president of SPCA. When Sabrina was with SPCA, we often see her face in the press, especially in court cases on animal abuse and animal rescue. If, as the SMS claimed that she was sacked, then it must be out of envy and malice because she was true to her cause and others are finding her ‘too true’ to animals which will eat into funds which are supposed to be for animals. I firmly believe that her crusade for animals did not go well with some NGOs as evidenced by the badmouthing she got for her commitment to this Pulau Ketam tragedy.

Let me share with you something that was told to me literally from the horse’s mouth (not Sabrina’s mouth). This person asked someone (no small fry) why this NGO doesn’t do more to improve the living quarters of the animals. The reply was to let the place look as drab as possible so that people would not think that this NGO has a lot of money. Which means that $$$ is never enough for this NGO. Why? They have plenty of donations from a big corporation and other smaller companies and individuals. What about fund-raising and endless jumble sales and whatnots?

3. ‘It is morally and legally wrong to ask for public donations….’
So, is it morally and legally right to use money meant for animals for something else, such as buying bungalow, paying legal suit, renovate toilets…….? Someone, answer that please!.

4. Yes, SPCA may have very impressive names to drop, but, we know that these very honourable YBs entrust the management of the whole setup, including funds, to people that they think they can trust. Are these people living up to the trust? The YBs, being busy people, can’t be breathing down the necks of the committee, can they? They have a thousand and one other things to do.

The extent to which some people would go through just to slander others:

A person by the name of Tracy (or Tracey), supposedly to be pro some NGO, and some others trespassed into FFF when Sabrina was not around. The supporters of this NGO were so keen to inform people that FFF is a private organization (therefore not legally allowed to accept donations) so shouldn’t Tracy (or Tracey) have asked FFF’s permission first before going there. Obviously, she did not, so isn’t that trespassing?

What transpired after that? She passed an SMS around that Sabrina has been abusing the dogs rescued from Pulau Ketam. She said that they are dehydrated and Sabrina is not willing to spend a single sen on them from the donations received, so on and so forth. What kind of woman is this Tracy (or Tracey)? Is she a vet to say that they are dehydrated? How does she know where the dogs are from? This Tracy (or Tracey) must be such a good ‘storyteller’. Nice name but wicked like the wicked step-mother in the make-believe world of Cinderella.. She obviously is not aware that the dogs from Pulau Ketam had been seen by Dr Thomas, Dr Jo and Dr Lian. I wonder what she hopes to gain by passing such stinking lies. I hope she has no children/grandchildren or has no plans to have a family. What will she reap to bear such false witness? Either she is just being very bitchy or she is just trying to tripod the NGO by feeding the public with false information or she is just the NGO’s henchman? Otherwise, why would she spread such lies? Is she really concerned about the animals at all?

Those who have been to FFF can testify that the animals are well taken care of, better than those at this particular NGO, considering that FFF does not have an army of volunteers or staff. They have just a handful who comes during the weekends. Yet, FFF can remain a no-kill ‘private organization’.

To the person/s that go all out to slander FFF and if you are representing any NGO, please know this:

People are not dumb and neither are they stupid not to care where they put their hard-earned money. People’s eyes are beginning to open. The more you try to damage another with untruths, the more you’ll suffer. If you want to damage another, do it with truths. You are doing the NGO you supposedly support more harm than good. Is ‘bad publicity’ better than none? Actually, someone asked me not to ‘open your eyes’ but I’m not an evil person like you. I, too, hope to see you transformed into an honest, true-to-self person. Maybe, the Mr Hyde in you is stronger now because you are blinded (by what, I don’t know) in your support for a dubious cause. Wake up! Or at the very least, stop damaging others who are trying to help the animals.
To all our YBs, forummers and members of the public, we know that you will be able to distinguish between what is true and false, who are frauds and who are true. Let it be known that we support whichever organization that “walks the talk”. So, if the accusations against FFF are proven, beyond doubt, to be true, I’m sure support will be withdrawn.

What we see now is a group of bitter, envious, spiteful, resentful, green-eyed monsters rearing their heads and hoping to destroy an organization which has not harmed them in anyway except not to follow the green-eyed monsters’ wishes.

PLEASE DON’T FORGET, OUR PRIMARY AIM SHOULD BE TO HELP THE ANIMALS, NOT SEEK PUBLICITY, GLORY OR MONEY.

More Cruelty!

Cruelty to animals can happen in unlikely places – not only in dog pounds, shelters, etc. but also in vets’ clinics. The following took place in a clinic in the Kelang Lama area.

Apparently, this clinic, especially the boss’s wife, has an extremely healthy appetite for ‘vitamin M’ more than anything else, are heartless and have no compassion at all for animals – be it their own, customers or abandoned ones at their clinic. Their pretence of compassion is reserved only for animals brought in by owners as, of course, they can make money from them. Such hypocrisy!

Dogs and cats that have been left or abandoned at this clinic were confined in very small enclosures – with hardly any room to move. Mind you, we’re talking about animals that have been there for years and years, not weeks or even months. There is this cat which keeps pawing and mewing at anyone who passes by ‘cos it wants attention. It used to be housed in a big cage with other cats until some renovations were done and the cat was put in this small enclosure. The vet’s wife, when asked why not give the cat for adoption, replied that she will only let the cat go to an adopter who can give business to the clinic. Apparently, there is a dog in a similar situation as well – always in a cage. If the boss’s wife loves $$$ so much, why not lie down to earn the money. Her ‘old bag’ may not fetch much but I’m sure she can get something for it. Don’t use animals to make money. Retribution is a very real word.

This clinic also very freely and easily debarks animals, without any guilty feelings. When asked why, the reply was they were very noisy. They even debark puppies. It would be great if someone could ‘debark’ the boss’s wife and let her get a taste of her own medicine. I’m sure she talks non-stop about money. Goodness, I’m sure she has no motherly instincts. If she has children, let’s hope that they don’t have to suffer the evil consequences of their parents’ doing.

What’s wrong with animals with 3 legs? It seems that the vets at this clinic will take the easy way and put animals down for the slightest reason. There was a case where a dog’s leg had to be amputated. Instead of giving the dog a chance, they put it to sleep. Obviously, the owner didn’t want the animal and it’s a burden to the clinic to keep it, so they took the easy way out. It’s not only 1 or 2 cases, it’s very freely done – putting animals down. So, now we have another spca / dbkl. Why can’t they ask people to adopt the animal? I’m sure there are many kind-hearted souls out there who would willingly do it. I was told that there was this particular 3-legged dog who looked at you with doleful eyes as if it knew that it would die soon. Some people do have heart of stone.

Owners who like to board their pets at vets – here is something for you. The staff can sometimes forget to feed the animals – no water and no food. If they discover that the animal has lost weight just before the owner comes to claim it, they will tell the owner that their pet is homesick and refuses to eat. Such good liars! The worst thing is that most owners swallow such lies hook, line and sinker.

It seems that the vets sometimes couldn’t be bothered when an animal with problem is highlighted to them, but will just simply dispense medication to apply, eg. if the animal has ear discharge. They won’t even look at the ear. They just give some med. for the animal. These vets take animals too lightly. They couldn’t be bothered that these animals may be suffering. When their loved ones suffer, let’s hope they remember that EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY.

Lastly, owners please take note, I was told that the charges at this clinic hinges on what cars you drive. Big car, very big charges, but small car, big charges. So, don’t let the ‘old bag’ see the car you drive. She may not be so entertaining if she can’t charge you very big charges.

How I hated listening to all these when told to me. I despise and detest people who make money from helpless creatures. I hope the old bag (the boss’s wife) will remember this – WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, WE REAP WHAT WE SOW. It seems that the husband is better but he is usually not in the clinic. Is he henpecked? I hope for the animals’ sake as well as his own and his future descendants, he will show he is a man and tame that wife of his to be kinder to animals.

It is so depressing listening and writing about cruelty to dumb creatures as I can visualise the suffering they go through. I hope all animal lovers will put some pressure on vets (money-faced ones) so that they will be true to their profession and not be hypocrites. Much as I detest it, I have to write to create awareness of such happenings although mine is only a small voice.

Cruelty to animals may be happening under our very nose. Don’t point fingers at municipal councils or breeders only, the very people who are suppose to have animal welfare at heart can be committing acts of cruelty too. To a great extent, pet owners are to be blamed. They do not take the trouble to educate themselves but believe everything told to them by vets. Or, they can be so selfish that as long as my animal is taken care of well, why should I be bothered with others. In my opinion and from my years of experience of dealing with vets, many of them try to pull wool over owners’ eyes.

Let’s lift our voices for these voiceless creatures who are also entitled to a life of dignity and have rights in this world and end their sufferings.

Oh, I forgot one last thing. She breeds or has intention to breed. With this kind of woman, one can imagine how the poor animal will be used to the maximum. BITCH!!!

More ghastly horror revelations about UPM torture chamber

I was horrified when inundated with more horror revelations about this institution of higher learning (learning? – ha! ha! ha! lunacy may be more correct) UPM. There is this torture chamber behind the post-mortem room (used to be called the elephant room ‘cos elephants used to be kept there) where healthy dogs and cats which are about to be ‘TORTURED’ are kept. If there is a vet’s name displayed, it means that that animal is meant for that particular ‘TORTURER’. It is his/her project and these are mainly PHD students and are mostly foreigners.

THIS PLACE IS IN HORRENDOUS, APPALLING, DREADFUL CONDITION. THE CAGES ARE OLD AND RUSTY. THE ANIMALS HOUSED THERE (WAITING TO BE ‘TORTURED’) SWIM IN THEIR FAECES AND WHETHER THEY ARE FED OR NOT DEPENDS ON THE VET IN CHARGE OF THE PROJECT (THE ANIMAL USED). ONE CAN EVEN HEAR THE PITIFUL CRIES OF THE ANIMALS. IF THE DOG DIES DUE TO STARVATION OR WHATEVER REASON, THEY CAN JUST EASILY OBTAIN ANOTHER ONE FROM THE POUND. AFTER ALL, THERE IS ENDLESS SUPPLY THANKS TO IRRESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS, BREEDERS, ETC., ETC.

These animals are used for research on therapy, for example, cancer, where a long period is required to produce the results. Invasive methods are used on healthy animals, similar to what is done by Eukanuba/IAMS, Hills for their prescription diet. This division is under the department of postgraduate studies.

Apparently, UPM is trying for apex university status so that they can get more funds, I believe, that comes with such status (it’s always about $$$, isn’t it?). To achieve that, the university must have lots of postgraduate students especially foreign students ($$$ again). It seems that UVH is always in the red – being overstaffed, high wastages, etc. Funds is never enough. As such, UVH, although they are aware of this torture and cruelty going on, choose to keep silent because they need funds and this faculty (dept. of postgraduate studies) generates the funds.

Don’t these people feel anything to see suffering? We were told that the lecturers in this faculty are vets but they could be specialists in horses, chickens, etc. They know nothing about dogs/cats except what they do in their practical. Neither do they know anything about healing animals because they don’t have hands-on experience, to them they are just that – animals.

For money, I believe some people will sell their souls to the devil. For money, they will condone all kinds of inhumane acts on helpless and innocent creatures which can’t speak for themselves nor defend themselves. I’m not surprised if one day children will be used as children are also helpless and innocent.

After the incident of the dog not fully euthanised, it seems the lecturer who obviously got a shelling ordered all trainee vets to make sure that all dogs are put-to-sleep at 5 pm. Reason: the lecturer wants to go home.

Someone mentions that one of the senior vets in UVH helps in Mercy Malaysia. How is it that deeds of cruelty is happening on home ground and nothing is done? I believe I can answer that. First, these are just animals and it matters not what is done to them. Second, the Veterinary Officers(VOs) are not allowed to voice out anything because the university needs the funds.

I marvel that the people – trainee vets, the lecturers and the torturers – can go home peacefully and spend time with their family. I hope the dead dogs will haunt them in their dreams and stalk their every waking moment.

I have a suggestion for UPM. Why don’t they adopt cost-cutting measures? Why have 20 people hanging around doing nothing when 1 or 2 will suffice? Get rid of the parasites and you may not need so much funds.

I have heard and read foreigners commending Malaysians for being kind people. Of course, we are kind – to allow them to come into our country to conduct acts of cruelty but I guess to many, it’s ok as they are only using the animals to do research.

UPM or DBKL – Which is more cruel to animals?

It seemed that upm does get dogs from dbkl for them to practise hands-on. Years ago, the student vets used to catch their own strays. This particular vet caught stray cats. Those days, the trainee vets were more responsible. They operated on the animals, then they stitched them up properly, took care of them and made sure that they were fit before releasing them.

Progressively, the trainee vets got more irresponsible. They can easily get animals from the dog pound. They operated on the animals. Then they stitched them back but at times the stitching were not done properly as the trainees couldn’t care less. Sometimes, the animal’s intestines could be seen dangling outside. Why should they bother as it’s easy come, easy go. Then, it was decided that the animals must be euthanised after the trainees had finished with them.

Now, comes the gory bit. On one occasion, a dog that was operated on was not stitched back as it was to be euthanized. The trainee euthanized the dog but did not ensure that the dog had died. The dog was put in the cold room (or something like that) waiting for disposal. The next day, when the staff went to get the carcasses of the animals, what did the staff see? The dead dog was in a posture that showed that it was trying to crawl out with all its entrails hanging out, eyes popped out - frozen – of course. What did the posture of the dog indicate? That it was not dead yet at the time it was put in the cold room. There was a big hue and cry after that incident. It was then decreed that all animals must be euthanized before the trainees operated on them. I just can’t begin to imagine the excruciating pain and trauma that the poor dog went through before it died or froze to death. I do hope indeed that death came quick for the poor dog.

Someone asked why is it that upm needs to have the dogs euthanized before being operated or experimented on. She said that upm should instead use these dogs to teach the vets to have the correct attitude towards animals through pre- and postoperative care – to be more humane, caring, to value life and be more responsible towards these abandoned, abused and unwanted lives. High calling indeed!!!

Let’s hope upm will have a better screening process when they have new intakes and not take in those who just want the title ‘Dr’ or just for money, money, money!!!!!

Eversince I heard and saw the clip on dbkl cruelty to animals, it was one disturbing and nightmarish time. I cancelled all classes to go to the gathering. It was good to establish contact with people of like mind; it helped to release inner stress.

Words fail to describe fully what I wish for these uncivilized barbarians who can resort to treating a life in such a ruthless way. I believe that these beasts have no heart but lumps of shit instead. Hell would be too good for these moronic bastards. They must be the product of the union between the devil and a screwed-up being. Every sane moment I pray that they will get instant retribution. Great it would be to have them see their loved ones suffer the same fate. I strongly believe they will – sooner or later. Come to think of it, do they have loved ones?

What about DBKL higher-ups? Are they so indifferent and unfeeling that they allow their subordinates to do whatever they wish and just turn a blind eye? I’m sure they know that the animals in captivity have been treated horrendously. Many such reports have been highlighted. Or is it because the victims are dogs? If that is the case, I hope they share the same fate as their barbaric workers. To see a wrong and not right it is as bad as pulling the trigger themselves.

I’ve been to Klinik Kembiri quite a number of times and I’ve seen how these dog-catchers treat the poor dogs. Bastards! Assholes! S.O.B.s. For a few measly $$$s, but of course it’s a fortune to these brutes, they can abuse poor helpless creatures. I pity their young daughters. I can imagine when their ‘animal’ desires surface, what they are capable of doing.

I hope the mayor or whoever is responsible will keep their word and investigate and account for this horror. To all animal activists, don’t let this incident die a natural death as with all previous happenings. Remember the shooting of dogs in Seremban in Mr Eng’s house. Let’s wake up from our stupor and see the atrocities around us, and most importantly, let us not be indifferent. Let’s fight for voiceless, helpless creatures.

Beats me how catching animals can be turned into a money-making venture and sport. Malaysians memang boleh! Boleh stoop to a lower level than animals. Boleh show the world how uncivilized we can be. I’m truly ashamed to be a Malaysian, to be associated with beasts like these.

Case: Animal lovers (representing murdered dogs and cats) vs DBKL

Plaintiff:  Animal lovers

Defendant: DBKL

Charge: Murdering innocent lives

Verdict: GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY!

Sentence: Murderers – dismembered in full public view; DBKL the organisation - relegate into oblivion (don’t waste taxpayers’ money on rubbish)

Pokey with a big gaping wound

Pokey with a big gaping wound

The Story

On 2 January 2009, Dr Irinda Toh from St Angel approached Amy and Dongdong from TU about a Labrador (name Pokey) that was abandoned by its owner. Poor thing! This 8-year dog was sent in to St Angel for maggot wound treatment. The owner asked Dr Toh to put it down but lucky for the dog, Dr Toh objected. They were supposed to send the dog to SPCA and the owner had agreed to pay the surrender fee but that was the last they saw of the owner (as at 2/1/2009).That’s why Dr Toh asked Amy to find anyone who was willing to adopt it as she couldn’t keep it at the clinic for too long. Dongdong took some pictures of it to post on the forums.

That evening, Vivian Ng, a Petfinder fosterer, came to our shop to buy some stuff. Amy mentioned the dog to her. She agreed to hop over to St Angel to take some pictures and she mentioned that she may take care of the dog until someone adopts it.

Next day (Saturday), she went to St Angel. Dr Toh told her the whole situation and Vivian agreed to take the dog on Sunday. When she went to pick up the dog on Sunday, a Dr Lee attended to her as Dr Toh was not around. This Dr Lee told Vivian that Dr Ding INSISTed that she had to pay an adoption/boarding fee of RM50 plus RM15 for medication. Of course, Vivian paid as they didn’t allow her to take the dog if she didn’t pay up. Her only thought was for the dog.

Our Comments

Pokey

It was malnourished with a big gaping maggot wound at the base of the spine. Its ribs could be seen. Now, how on earth could a dog get such a big wound if it had been properly taken care of? It was a short-fur dog and even then the fur was matted. Our guess is the owners neglected it and most likely left it to the maid to look after.

The Owners

The owners brought it in for treatment and the husband so ‘kindly and conveniently’ felt that the dog was in pain because of its ‘big gaping’ wound and wanted it to be put down. They paid for the boarding and treatment for 4 days. So magnanimous and kind of them! The wife wanted to keep the dog but the husband objected. They were supposed to return to pay the surrender fee after Dr Toh told them that instead of putting down, they will send it to SPCA (poor dog – out of the frying pan into the fire) but after 4 days, there was no sign of them. It was timely that Amy and Dongdong went to St Angel.

A note to the wife: I hope you will always be in good health otherwise your husband will ‘kindly and conveniently’ euthanize you if he can. If I were you, leave him while you are still healthy and mobile. You are in a no-win situation. Stick with him, and him being such a heartless, ungrateful person, you may have to take care of him in his suffering (his due reward). Stay with him and he may dump you in a nursing home and sign the euthanasia papers, exactly like what he did to Pokey (hopefully, Malaysia will not have legalized euthanasia on humans by then).

A note to the husband: Let’s hope when you are in dire straits, your children will not dump you like you dumped Pokey. But, remember, what goes around comes around. Your children are what you show or teach them by example. You will reap what you sow. Did you watch the advertisement put up by Petronas during the Raya season? The one showing the old man being put aside even during meal times. Have you heard of this word ‘retribution’? Most likely, you have not. Otherwise, you would think twice about doing what you did. How on earth could you be so bad and cruel to do something like that to a life that possibly had brought joy and companionship to you and your family at one time?

A note to the both of you: Do not blame anyone or fate if your life’s circumstances change for the worse or if something horrible happens to your household. Remember Pokey and the day you abandoned him and wanted him to die. You created your own fate.

Dr Toh

Luckily, Dr Toh, as we know her, has a kind heart basically. Quite a number of times, she had refused to put animals down. Instead, she tried to get them adopted. Kudos to Dr Toh who shows that her heart is in the right place and that there still are humane vets around!

Vivian Ng and Alex Ang

They didn’t have to do what they did, yet, they did it. I believe not many people would have done this kind deed. We have proven it on many occasions when we approached people to take rescued animals. They came up with many ‘valid’ excuses. Vivian and Alex would rather inconvenience themselves and incur extra expenses than see the dog sent to SPCA, which is common knowledge as to what will happen to an aged dog, worse if it is also malnourished and wounded. Even now, they are not simply giving the dog to anyone who wants to adopt it. They are screening each interested applicant very, very carefully because they do not want Pokey to suffer anymore. They do not want history to repeat itself for Pokey. Daily, they have set up a schedule for someone to clean the wound and feed it and to spend time with it. The dog is being housed inside their new house. How many people would have allowed this? Especially, a new house and most people associate the word ‘dirty’ with animals. I believe Vivian and Alex will have a very good life, unlike Pokey’s owner. Incidentally, Vivian’s brother and sister-in-law have been roped in to help with the looking after of the dog. Very kind people too!

The boss of St Angel

Does the fifty bucks matter so much to you that you can’t even waive it? If you had sent the dog to SPCA, you would need to pay the surrender fee (oh, maybe it’s a lesser amount, so you would have made some money there too). After all, the dog was at your place and it was your vet who approached us to get someone to take the dog. At the least, you should have shown some compassion and not be so money-face about it. Looks like your vet is nobler than you. The people who came to take the dog need not have taken it. As a human, you should have some sense of nicety. In principle, we agree that you didn’t do anything wrong, but we would have expected you not to take money for it. Now, come to think of it, why are we expecting you not to take the money? After all, I believe that’s the reason you’re in business – money. Possibly, the title ‘Dr’ is quite attractive to you too.

Someone prompted me and said that maybe you do need that 50 bucks. Remember, when we leave this world, we can’t bring it with us. We came into this world empty-handed and we leave it the same way too. Neither can we use it in the next world. Oh, someone said that maybe you are making as much as you can for your next generation. May I remind you that your next generation may not grow up to use the money that you so faithfully make for them. Do you need more money? We can always pass the hat around and collect much, much more than the fifty bucks that you INSISTed for Pokey. Let us know.

St Angel Veterinary Hospital

This name hangs a lot on our lips. We have recommended a lot of people there for the sole reason that Dr Toh is there. We have high regard for her medical skills as well as her nobility of heart to animals. That is why, we always INSIST that people see only Dr Toh or if she’s not around, Dr Chan Wei Yee. Dr Chan may not be as experienced as Dr Toh, but we can see that she is passionate about her job. Initially, I didn’t like her much but as I get to deal more with her, I find that she can indeed take up the mantle of Dr Toh. I remember at one time when one of our cats was having urinary blockage and it was already closing time at the clinic in Kajang, she cancelled her appointment and stayed back to help the cat. I believe that the cat is still alive to this day because of what she did.

We want to say that St Angel is lucky to have these 2 vets there. I hope the boss knows how to keep good staff. He’d better cling on to them as the minute they leave, we and our customers plus the ‘entourage’ of TU will follow suit. That was what happened a few years back when Dr Lee Foo Khong left Segar Pets and Dr Loh Pitt Khim and Dr Irinda Toh left UPM.

To the readers of this blog:

If anyone thinks that I’m too frank and blunt in speaking my mind, maybe disgustingly wicked, let’s exchange places. If you have seen that many animals suffering and dying as we have, and have that many animals under your care (with no financial support from anyone), then you’ll understand why I’m so pissed off that some people can’t even forego 50 bucks and shitty, irresponsible owners like Pokey’s. But of course, when I think of people like Dr Toh, Vivian and Alex and many other private rescuers, then the world doesn’t look so bad.
